In the last few years the partnership has helped to develop KS1/2 PALS and KS4 Sports Leaders, but there were little opportunities for KS3 students as they left their primary schools and arrived at their new secondary school. In 2006, 37% of Year 6 students were involved in sports leadership according to the PESSCL survey. However the following year, after the students had left primary schools and entered our secondary schools, only 1% of Year 7 students were involved in sports leadership. We recognised this and took steps to develop leadership training at KS3 to complete the 'pathway' of leadership.
BRCC piloted a KS3 leadership project last year. The training offered a select group of students several 90 min after school session to provide them the training they needed. These students are now able to assist onsite with sporting activities at BRCC.
Each SSCo will pilot KS3 leadership in their school this year. While KS4 leaders are often used off site at primary schools and partnership festivals, KS3 leaders can help on site with lunch and after school clubs.
