Olympic Conference - Secondary

On Wednesday the 18th of January the West Sussex West School Sport Partnership organised a Young Ambassador Conference for KS3/4 students representing 9 different local secondary schools.  These Young Ambassadors were chosen by their school to due to their hard work and commitment and to be an Olympic role model within their school.  The Young Ambassador programme is sponsored by Adidas and therefore the students are known as adiStars.

The School Sport Partnership also has 3 Gold Ambassadors; Pete Hopkins (Bishop Luffa), Zoe Gibben (The Regis School), Sam Grover (Felpham Community College) and 1 Platinum Ambassador – Zack Coleman (Bishop Luffa).

The Conference was planned and delivered almost entirely by the more experience Platinum and Gold Ambassadors, support by Kate Smith from the West Sussex West School Sport Partnership.  Kate said, “These four students are a credit to their individual schools and our partnership as they take on the responsibility of being role models to younger ambassadors in our local schools. It is great to see young people training other youngsters!”

The afternoon was designed to introduce the adiStars to their new ambassador roles, raise the profile of London 2012 and give them inspirational ideas to take back to their own schools.  On arrival the students were grouped in Olympic host cities and throughout the afternoon had workshop time to discuss ideas for promoting the Olympic and Paralympic values within their own school, presentations and a Paralympic practical challenge.

The students were extremely fortunate enough to have a presentation from Mr Clive Stephens, Olympic Park General Manager for London 2012. He spoke to the young people about his role within the Olympic Games and some fascinating facts regarding the Olympic Park venues and the Olympic village. For example the workforce for the London 2012 Games including young volunteers exceeds the whole population of Chichester! The other guest speaker was Emma Wiggs, PE teacher at The Regis School and GB Sitting Volleyball captain.  She gave an inspiration talk to the young people about her journey as an athlete and the importance of hard work and determination. The adiStars had a great day meeting new friends, hearing some inspirational stories, accessing new resources and taking away some great ideas of how to promote the Olympic and Paralympic values in their school.  James White adiStar for Chichester High School for Boys commented, “What a great experience.  I am excited to get things going back at school!”
