FAB Saturday Tournament

Felpham and Bognor Regis Football & Netball annual Saturday Tournament

The 2nd March saw the Arena Sports Centre host the annual Felpham and Bognor Regis (FAB) football and netball tournament. The event has been running over 10 years and is bigger and more successful than ever before. The event continues to expand as the entries increase.

The West Sussex West School Sport Partnership (WSW SSP) run monthly fixtures in the build up to the competition, giving hundreds of children the chance to experience fast pace matches in a tournament style before the big event. We now have nearly every school providing an A and B team in Football and Netball at the fixtures and majority at the tournament.

With a few late drop outs we had 9 football A teams, 8 football B teams, 8 Netball A teams and 5 Netball B teams. This meant around 300 children competed.

The event could not happen without The Regis School sports leaders who gave up their Saturday to officiate both football and netball. They did a fantastic job under some intense competitive situations. They were a credit to The Regis School and an asset to the WSW SSP event.

The netball had 2 league style competitions with everyone having the chance to compete against each other. The B team results finished with Bishop Tufnell taking gold, Bartons taking silver and Edward Bryant gaining bronze. Edward Bryant, however, confidently took 1st place in A team tournament not losing a single game. Bishop Tufnell weren’t far behind in 2nd by only 2pts with Bishop Tufnell 3rd again by a 2 point margin. Mrs Lock from Edward Bryant who always gets a consistent performance from her netball team was extra pleased with this result, the children did her proud in her last year before retirement. A huge thank you to Mrs Lock’s dedication to sport in the area over the years, constantly delivering school sport success at Edward Bryant. Edward Bryant will battle Bishop Tufnell Barnham and the top 3 from Chichester at the end of the month for the School Games High 5 Netball Area Final.

The Chichester & Bognor area football tournament had already taken place, which saw Downview crowned the champions, therefore making them favourites for this tournament. They finished top of their group and had a hard fought battle with the consistent Rose Green. The favourites did win and booked their place in the final against the “home” team Southway. Whilst the A team final took place the B team tournament was equally impressive with St Mary’s reaching the knockout stage for the first time in the last 5 years. Joining them were the always competitive Rose Green, the 2016 B team champions and previous area winners Bishop Tufnell and 2017 B team champions Southway. Reaching the final was Rose Green and last year’s winners Southway trying to retain their title.

Both A and B league finals kicked off together. With Southway aiming to be champions in both again. After some strong tackles, high quality football and some late goals it was Southway who were crowned B team champions and Downview who justified favouritism as Area Champions also crowned the FAB A team champions.
