FAB Football & Netball Saturday Tournament

The 7th of March saw the Arena Sports Centre host the annual Felpham and Bognor Regis (FAB) football and netball tournament. The event has been running over 10 years and is bigger and more successful than ever before. The event continues to expand as the entries increase.

The West Sussex West School Sport Partnership (WSW SSP) run monthly fixtures in the build up to the competition, giving hundreds of children the chance to experience fast pace matches in a tournament style before the big event. We now have nearly every school providing an A and B team in Football and Netball at the fixtures and majority at the tournament.

The tournament hosted 9 football A teams, 8 football B teams, 9 Netball A teams and 3 Netball B teams. This meant around 290 children competed.

The event could not happen without The Regis School sports leaders who gave up their Saturday to officiate both football and netball. They did a fantastic job under some intense competitive situations. They were a credit to The Regis School and an asset to the WSW SSP event.

The netball was played in two styles with the A-teams playing in two pools, pool A containing 5 teams and pool B containing 4, and the B teams, due to a lack of numbers, played a round robin meaning everyone played everyone. The A-team pools ended with Downview topping pool A closely followed by South Bersted in second and in pool B Bishop Tufnell finished top of the pool followed by Rose Green in second. This set up semi-finals of Downview versus Rose Green and Bishop Tufnell versus South Bersted. After some intense end to end netball Bishop Tufnell and Downview won their semi’s setting up the final which saw Bishop Tufnell win the final ultimately winning the tournament. Whilst the final was being played a 3rd and 4th playoff between Rose Green and South Bersted was being played which saw South Bersted win and finish 3rd overall. In the B-team tournament Downview B finished in 1st followed by Rose Green B in 2nd and South Bersted B in 3rd. A huge well done to all schools that participated as every child showed amazing sportsmanship and determination throughout the tournament.

In football both the A and B teams played in two pools. In the A competition Downview finished 1st in pool A followed by Southway in 2nd. Pool B saw Edward Bryant top the pool followed by Rose Green setting up semi-finals of Downview versus Rose Green and Edward Bryant versus Southway. After some tight games which saw Downview versus Rose Green go to extra time Downview and Southway won their semi-finals setting up the A final. On the B side, pool A saw Southway B top the group followed by Edward Bryant B and in pool B Downview B finished top followed by Southway C. This set up semi-finals of Southway B versus Southway C and Downview B versus Edward Bryant B. After a penalty shoot-out in the Downview B versus Edward Bryant B semi, which was eventually won by Downview B, the final was set seeing Downview B versus Southway B in the final. Both the A and B finals were played at the same time and both ended with the same result as Southway won both finals. Another huge well done to all the children that participated who showed brilliant passion throughout.
